Conserving and protecting Northwest Florida's natural environments are critically important goals. The natural area of Northwest Florida is what makes this region so special. Families have an opportunity to learn and explore the ecological diversity while kayaking on coastal dune lakes or camping among the wildlife in one of the many state parks. For adventure seekers searching for the road less traveled, the area's vast network of trails fits the bill, whether you're heading out on foot or on a bicycle.

After experiencing the beautiful waters of Northwest Florida, you may think you've seen it all. Think again. Head into the magnificent longleaf pine forests and fields and hike among the wildflowers. Spend the day birding (bird watching). The habitat ranges from coastline and marshes to bottomland forests, meadows, freshwater lakes and upland forests.

Parks are central to many Southern communities and are often associated with the most prominent public buildings, providing memorable structure. Cerulean Park is the "heart" of WaterColor and defines a long "water axis" that connects Gulf to lake, uniting two distinct places in a direct and powerful way.

Surrounded by moss-draped live oaks and ornamental gardens, the Wesley House in Eden Gardens State Parkinspires visions of hoop skirts and landed gentry. The park is part of the estate owned in the 1800s by the Wesleys, a wealthy Florida timber family. Or spend the afternoon swimming, beachcombing, hiking or fishing at Camp Helen State Park, located on the south side of Highway 98 and bordered on three sides by the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Powell.

Visit one of the many places The St. Joe Company and its conservation partners are working to conserve. Bald Point State Park in Franklin County contains active osprey nests, wading bird habitats, shore bird breeding grounds and ample space for the Florida black bear to roam. Or explore the state parks near SummerCamp Beach.

Moving toward Tallahassee near SouthWood, St. Marks National Wildlife Refuge is a must-see. St. Marks is home to more than 250 species of birds, waterfowl and diverse habitats and the historic St. Marks lighthouse. Wakulla Springs is home to one of the largest and deepest freshwater springs in the world. Daily guided riverboat and glass-bottom boat tours provide a closer view of wildlife.
